Stupid
Stupid

What can I say to my small son
when he tells me school makes
him feel stupid?
That his brain doesn’t work
like the other kids.
Every morning he anxiously
checks if today
is a ‘school day’.
Face crumples
when I say yes.
I kept him at home
last Monday.
In the morning we did Maths
and writing all afternoon.
He wouldn’t stop
until he had proved
to me there could be
no doubt
that he wasn’t stupid.
Not stupid at all.
